This isn’t really a dress. For me, this is a self-portrait.
I am an analog bioprinter.
My method is the core of every piece I make. I use no plan and no pattern. I use no decoration: each stitch is structural. My trademark emotional stitching spontaneously shapes each piece. I use no machine except myself.
I work only with one piece of fabric intuitively and spontaneously draping it directly on the body, cutting it only to shape it, never cutting anything off, working every inch back into the form. The fabric remains intact. This forces the intense innovation that I believe is the energy of my work. I stitch every piece by hand myself, feeling the shape, using only my needle and thread. This is my original method.
Each piece is one of a kind.
My newest work is called Tension. I am exploring the interplay of the fabric and the thread and negative space as I cut wildly and my stitching pulls tight or spins out of control, as my thread blooms into color and grows thicker and thicker into yarn, weaving across wide spaces or holding by a single stitch.
Beautiful anxiety!
As each piece is a self-portrait, fabric is skin…thread is skeleton, nerve, blood vessel…negative space is nudity. I am an analog bioprinter. I am creating a new body, an other body. Sparked to life by the energy of emotional decision.
